The flag pole at the beach access is the most useful thing on the Alabama coast and the most widely misread.
Inside the corporate limits of both Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, a double red flag is not guidance. City ordinance closes the Gulf to swimmers when those two flags are flown, entering the water is an offence, and it carries a penalty. In practice the beach safety staff would far rather talk to you than write anything down, and they will tell you so, but the rule is real and it is enforceable.
This is the part most visitors never learn, and it saves a wasted morning.
Both are run for this coast specifically. Neither requires an app.
The hazard here is rarely how big the waves are. It is the volume of water that has been pushed over the offshore sandbar finding a gap and running back out to sea through it.
From a fifth-floor balcony, the surface above one of those channels usually looks flatter and more inviting than the churning water on either side of it. That is not a coincidence — it is what a rip current looks like from above, and it is the reason strong swimmers get caught out on days that photograph beautifully.
If one takes hold of you, stop trying to make progress towards the sand. Let it carry you while you move along the beach, across the pull rather than into it, and turn for shore only once you feel it release. Get an arm up early so somebody on the beach can see you.
Go to flat water. Wolf Bay and Terry Cove behind Orange Beach, Little Lagoon behind West Beach and Lake Shelby inside Gulf State Park are all sheltered from whatever is making the Gulf dangerous. The beach itself stays open on a double red day. It is only the water that is closed.
Flag status changes through the day as conditions shift, so read the pole every time you come down rather than once on the first morning.
