Everything Comes Off the Sand an Hour After Sunset, and It Is Not About Tidiness

Since 2016, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have both required that personal belongings come off the beach within one hour after sunset. Chairs, umbrellas, tents, coolers, toys, boogie boards — everything. Anything still out after that window can be collected and disposed of by beach patrol, with permitted vendor equipment the only exception.

The campaign name is Leave Only Footprints, and visitors routinely mistake it for a litter-and-tidiness initiative. It is a wildlife rule.

What the beach is at night

From the first of May to the end of October, this coast is a nesting beach. A female sea turtle hauling out after dark that meets a row of abandoned chairs will frequently turn round and go back into the water without nesting at all. A hatchling weighing a few grams and heading for the sea cannot climb over a cool box, and cannot get out of a hole somebody dug and left.

The same applies to the shorebirds that nest and roost above the tide line, and to the Alabama beach mouse in the dunes behind it.

The rule people trip over

There is a second clause that is less well known. Tents and shelters larger than roughly seven feet wide or four feet high must be set north of the marker posts and flags, back towards the dune line, rather than pitched down by the water.

The markers are there precisely so that the space between them and the sea stays clear overnight and at first light, when the patrol volunteers walk the beach looking for tracks.

What a visitor actually has to do

Push the sand back into any hole you dug. Flatten the castle. Fold up the chairs and carry the tent back with you rather than staking it out to hold tomorrow's spot. If you are on a Gulf-front balcony, turn the outside lights off and pull the curtains.

That is the whole of it. It costs a family five minutes at the end of the day, and it is the difference between a nest that works and one that does not.

Both cities publish their own beach rules and the detail differs slightly between them and the state park, so check the rules for the specific beach you are using.
