For years, one weekend in May turned the public beach at the foot of Highway 59 into a festival site and filled the town with tens of thousands of people who were not there for the sand. In 2025 that weekend ran under a different name, with a different promoter, and sold out.
In 2026, neither event took place. Gulf Shores' mayor confirmed in a council meeting in December 2025 that no festival would be held that spring, citing a timeline that had run too short for the calibre of line-up the city required. The city has since been working towards bringing the event back in 2027.
Because a May festival weekend on this coast is not a neutral event. It changes accommodation pricing across both towns, fills the roads, closes part of the public beach for load-in and load-out, and alters the character of the destination for the better part of a week.
That cuts both ways. Some visitors book specifically for it. Rather more book specifically around it.
Either way, the practical instruction is the same: do not plan a May trip on the assumption that a festival will or will not be running. This has changed twice in two years.
Confirm directly with the promoter and with the City of Gulf Shores before booking. Council agendas and city announcements are where the decision is made public first, usually well ahead of any line-up.
Quieter than most people expect, and rather good. Water temperature reaches the upper seventies, air temperatures sit in the mid-eighties, sea turtle nesting opens on the first of the month, and the beach has not yet filled with the summer family season. Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month is the first genuine crush of the year.
If you wanted the Alabama coast at its most pleasant and least crowded, a festival-free May is close to it.
